Futomaki Sushi(futomaki zushi)

ふとまきずし

Alternative spelling: 太巻(ふとま)寿司(ずし)

Futomaki sushi is a classic sushi variant that consists of a large, elongated, and cylindrical shape. The term is composed of the Japanese words futomaki 「太巻き」, which literally means “thick roll”, and sushi 「寿司」 for the generic designation of the dish. Futomaki Sushi is one of the larger and more filling sushi rolls, consisting of several ingredients such as cooked fish, vegetables, omelet, and sushi rice.

The ingredients for futomaki sushi are typically arranged on a rectangular bamboo mat (makisu) and then rolled into a cylindrical shape. Often used ingredients include smoked eel (unakyu), fried crab and omelet, fresh sashimi slices such as tuna, salmon and yellowtail, as well as various vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, avocado, and scallions. The ingredients are often refined with wasabi and shoyu (soy sauce) to enhance the taste. After rolling, the futomaki sushi roll is cut into bite-sized pieces and served with gari (pickled ginger).

In contrast to other sushi rolls like hosomaki or uramaki, futomaki sushi is a very rich and filling meal as it consists of several different ingredients.
